NDSU horticulture science student Shawna Coalwell was named a 2018-19 Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association Foundation’s Academic Award recipient. She will receive a scholarship co-sponsored by Southview Design, a landscape contractor headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The foundation’s Academic Awards program recognizes outstanding students enrolled in horticultural or landscape studies who have made horticulture or landscaping their career choice. The program also helps students make connections with nursery and landscape employers who are association members. More than 20 scholarships are awarded every year.

Selection for the scholarship is based on academic standing, letters of recommendation from instructors and employers and an essay by the student stating their career goals.

Coalwell, a senior from Sabin, Minnesota, is advised by Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, professor and high value crop production project leader. After earning her bachelor’s degree, she is considering graduate school or a job in plant breeding or nursery management.

The scholarship will be awarded during the Green Industry Awards Celebration scheduled for January in Minneapolis. Recipients are offered complimentary registration to attend the concurrent Northern Green event, which offers education, product demonstrations, and networking opportunities for green industry professionals.
