The NDSU chapter of the Blue Key National Honor Society has selected David Buchanan, associate dean for academic programs in NDSU's College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources, to receive the Distinguished Educator Award.

Buchanan is scheduled to be honored Monday, Dec. 10. The society is recognizing Buchanan for his interest in and efforts to help students, along with his expertise and dedication to NDSU.

"I have been observing the good things that NDSU Blue Key does for most of my life," Buchanan said. "That makes this recognition especially meaningful."

He joined NDSU in 2007 as a professor and head of the animal sciences department. He became associate dean in 2012.

Buchanan, a Fargo native, earned his bachelor of science degree in animal science from NDSU. He earned his master's degree in animal science and doctorate in animal breeding and genetics from the University of Nebraska.

The Blue Key National Honor Society was established at NDSU in 1927, and the chapter was the 28th established in the U.S.

Blue Key membership is based on scholastic achievement, leadership abilities and involvement in campus activities and service.
