Johnson wins billboard artist competition

Anna Johnson, a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, has been chosen as the NDSU Department of Visual Arts' current billboard artist. The billboard features her drawing, titled "Changes," and will be on display through January 2010. Located on NP Avenue near 8th Street in Fargo, the billboard features the artwork of different NDSU Visual Arts students several times a year.

"Changes" is a drawing that represents the American Indian experience. Johnson portrays this experience using natural images of the seasons in addition to a path symbolizing the future. The bear symbolizes strength, while other images portray how white people value Indian cultures throughout the world. The medium is ink, acrylic, rope and fabric on paper.

Johnson has participated in several exhibitions, including shows at the Plains Art Museum, Heritage Hjemkomst Museum and the NDSU Reineke Visual Arts Gallery. She is a graduate of Bismarck High School and is the daughter of Edward Johnson, Jr. and Mary and Jim Mitchell.
