NDSU student Annika Sidhuhas been named a 2019 Traffic Safety Scholar and awarded a $1,000 scholarship to attend the 37th annual Lifesavers National Conference on Highway Safety Priorities March 31-April 2 in Louisville, Kentucky. Sidhu is one of 50 U.S. and international students selected through a competitive application process.

“I am honored to be a second-time recipient of the Traffic Safety Scholarship for the Lifesavers Conference,” said Sidhu, who is majoring in health communication and minoring in health services administration at NDSU through Tri-College at Minnesota State University Moorhead. “I am most excited to learn about the 'Toward Zero Deaths by 2050' initiatives for our roadways, as well as the ever-changing technology and driver assistance technology. I am also eager to meet and make connections with others who share the same passions for traffic and roadway safety."

Sidhu is from Prior Lake, Minnesota.

The Lifesavers Conference showcases the latest research, evidence-based strategies, proven countermeasures, and promising new approaches for addressing the nation’s most pressing traffic safety problems.

This is the fourth year of the program, which gives college students the opportunity to attend the largest gathering of traffic safety professionals in the U.S. The program’s goal is to showcase the diversity of opportunities in traffic safety and encourage students to pursue a career in a field that draws from a variety disciplines such as engineering, education and enforcement to communication, business, marketing, medicine, public health, political science and counseling.

On March 30, Sidhu and 49 fellow scholars will learn about career opportunities from a panel of young traffic safety professionals working in the public and private sectors. The scholars will later meet with state and national traffic safety leaders at a reception in their honor.

During the conference, the scholars will participate in three plenary sessions and 84 workshops featuring leading experts in the fields of distracted and impaired driving and walking; child passenger, pedestrian, bicycle, motorcycle, teen and older driver safety; adult occupant protection; vehicle technology; law enforcement and criminal justice; commercial motor vehicles; and roadway design.
