NDSU’s Technology Fee Advisory Committee has awarded funds to three campus technology projects. This spring, the committee sought proposals for information technology projects designed to improve the quality of education and campus life for students at NDSU.
With approval from Marc Wallman, vice president for information technology, the following projects received funds in spring 2019:
• Smart boards in Main Library study rooms
Project director: Trevor McNeil, IT Division, on behalf of Student Government
SMART display technology will be installed in a study space of the NDSU Main Library. The resource will help students collaborate and interact as they study. Student Government will provide matching funds for a second SMART display, to be installed in another library study room.
• Development of an NDSU campus eSports Lab
Project director: Paul Wraalstad, Memorial Union
The Memorial Union will create an eSports Lab in the Recreation and Outing Center through a partnership with Information Technology Services and the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science. Funding will be used for startup costs of the lab, which will include 17 desktop PCs, infrastructure, desks and chairs. A pay-to-play charging system will be established to supporting the ongoing expenses of the lab. eSports is a growing field in the higher education environment, and it provides students with opportunities to collaborate, socialize and foster friendships within the safety of a university environment.
• Wellness Center digital marketing and engagement platform
Project director: Jeff Dertinger, Wellness Center
The project provides funding to implement an integrative add-on mobile application called FusionGo. The app will integrate with the Wellness Center’s current membership system and will provide instant updates for GroupFIT, online and mobile registrations, facility schedules and engagement with social media and facility use. The FusionGo app will benefit both students located on campus and remote participantas in Wellness Center activities through the app. In conjunction with this project, the Wellness Center will add an integrated music system that will allow students to have partial control over the audio environment during social activities and intramurals by selecting and requesting music recordings and genres.
