Sung plans several performances

Benjamin Sung, strings instructor, gave several performances this month.

"Painting in Sound: A look at Abstract Expressionism through Arnold Schoenberg’s Verklaerte Nacht and Steve Reich’s Different Trains" was held March 4 at Minnesota State University Moorhead's Gaede Stage and March 10 at the Stephen B. Humphrey Auditorium at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn. The lecture/recital examined the artistic relationship between German expressionism and abstract expressionism as embodied in the musical works of Schoenberg and Reich. Sung acted as presenter in addition to performing the pieces with an ensemble.

Sung was the featured violin soloist with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra during their Masterworks concert March 13-14 at NDSU’s Festival Concert Hall. They performed "Sinfonia No. 9 in b minor" by Mendelssohn, "Pulcinella Suite" by Stravinsky and Sung was the soloist for Vivaldi’s "Four Seasons. "

Sung also will conduct a weekend chamber music residency in Rosemary Beach, Fla., with the Arsenal Trio, of which he is a member. The residency will take place March 19-20 and will feature educational concerts for schools and the public. The Arsenal Trio, which also includes NDSU piano instructor Jihye Chang, will perform pieces by Tchaikovsky, Hummel and Schoenfield.
