NDSU teaches children how to give back to community

The Center for Child Development at North Dakota State University is sponsoring a community-giving project for the Salvation Army. Children who attend the center will participate in the 2010 Caring and Sharing Food Project, assisting the Salvation Army in the upcoming community flood fight by helping to feed volunteers.

Center staff will take the children to local grocery stores where they will purchase sandwich supplies, such as bread and spreadable margarine, with donations supplied by each child's family. Then, they will travel to the Salvation Army kitchen to deliver the supplies. Both toddlers and preschoolers will have the opportunity to participate in this field trip.

According to Deb Habedank, director of the center, children will learn about different aspects of the flood such as the river, sandbagging and surrounding areas. "We'll talk about families who may be affected by the flood and they will experience the importance of sharing with others and how it can have greater benefits than receiving," she said. "The children will learn that everyone can make a difference, no matter what their size."

The date of the field trip will be determined when flood relief efforts begin. Organizers will make an announcement two days in advance of the event. For more information, contact Habedank at debra.habedank@ndsu.edu or (701) 237-828
