Faculty and students take active role at FEMA Conference

Department of Emergency Management faculty, students and graduates were active in the 2010 Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Annual Higher Education Conference in Emmitsburg, Md., in June.

Carol Cwiak coordinated the nomination, review and award process for the Wayne Blanchard Award established by NDSU recognizing academic excellence in emergency management higher education. Cwiak presented “Principles of Emergency Management Independent Study Course Development” and the annual research-based report on emergency management programs across the nation and the body of knowledge review. She also presented an extended session on “Emergency Management for Higher Education: U.S. Department of Education Resources and Grantee Highlights from North Dakota State University.” That session reviewed activities generated at NDSU from the $412,353 Department of Education planning grant for which Cwiak serves as principal investigator.

Marc Khatchadourian, NDSU graduate student, also participated in that session giving a presentation on emergency management internships.

Daniel J. Klenow, department head, presented “Building and Maintaining Emergency Management Programs” and Jessica Jensen, lecturer and graduate student, gave a presentation on “Theoretical Considerations for Emergency Management in Higher Education.” Mike Kemp, PhD ’10, teamed up with Dan Martin, doctoral student, to present “Utilizing Emergency Management Focused Technologies in the Classroom.”
