The Korea-U.S. Science Cooperation Center (KUSCO) selected EunSu Lee, NDSU transportation and logistics student, as a scholarship recipient for 2010. KUSCO honors 15 outstanding graduate students across the nation who have demonstrated talent in science and engineering fields. KUSCO enhances cooperative efforts in science and technology between Korea and the United States.

Lee received $1,500 and the opportunity to attend the U.S.-Korea Conference on science, technology and entrepreneurship in Seattle in August. During the conference, Lee will present a paper on flood levels and transportation infrastructures. He collected data from the Red River to create a visualization based on the Light Detection Ranging (LiDAR) datasets and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Lee is one of only 15 student presenters who were invited to join the job fair and career workshop during the conference.

Lee’s current research focuses on logistics and global supply chain management by using simulations and Geographic Information Systems. He chose to research how flooding affects transportation infrastructure because of the impact the 2009 and 2010 floods had on the Fargo area. Lee’s research allows at-risk roads and bridges to be identified through simulating water levels at different flood stages. Utilizing technology to simulate flood waters aids in flood prediction and preparation and provides better understanding of sustainability.

Lee began working on his doctorate in the transportation and logistics program at NDSU after earning his master’s degree in industrial management and engineering from NDSU in 2006. He also holds a Master of Business Administration in operations management from Hanyang University and a bachelor’s of engineering in information technology from Kwandong University.
