Gary Stolzenberg, longtime associate of NDSU and retired lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, died Sept. 30 in Fargo. He was 70 years old.

Originally from New York, Stolzenberg earned his bachelor’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1962 and completed his doctorate in biochemistry in 1968 from Kansas State University. He joined the USDA Metabolism and Radiation Laboratory in Fargo in 1969 where he carried out pesticide research until his retirement in 1995. In 1996, Stolzenberg joined the NDSU Department of Chemistry as a lecturer and manager of the undergraduate organic laboratories. He retired from the department in 2006 and continued for another year as the NDSU acting safety officer. He was actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the department and participated on a National Institutes of Health project serving North Dakota tribal colleges to provide summer chemistry instruction for American Indians pursuing careers in the biomedical field. After his retirement, he continued to help graduate and undergraduate students in the department on a volunteer basis.

A memorial service is scheduled for Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, 215 7th St. S., Fargo.
