College of Human Development and Education recent publications, presentations and awards

Several College of Human Development and Education faculty members recently received awards, gave presentations and had research published.

Career and Technical Education Research Journal, Brent Young, three-year appointment on managing and editing board beginning in November. 

International Society of Biomechanics in Sports conference, "A Comparison of Lower Body Angles Between Free High Pulls and a Fixed High Pull Apparatus" Bryan Christensen, Kim Pinske and Sarah Hilgers; "The Effects of Acute Whole Body Vibration on Maximal Countermovement Vertical Jump in Recreationally Active Males and Females," Hilgers and Christensen.

Tufts University Nutrition Symposium and American Dietetics Association Food and Nutrition Conference, Abby Gold, received Sustainable Agriculture and Research Education funding to attend; Gold participated in a North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture and Research Education work group on “Scaling Up Local Foods” in Minnesota and North Dakota.

Bush Leadership Fellowship, Lyn DeLorme.

Association for Career and Technical Education Research conference, Mari Borr and a team of teacher educators presented “Building a Community of Learners in an Inter-institutional, Online Graduate Program for Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Preparation.”

Journal of Food Service Business Research, Sherri Nordstrom Stastny, Alexa Hanson and Arupendra Mozumdar presented “Effect of Nutrition Facts Panel and Ingredient Declaration on Customer Satisfaction and Nutrition Perceptions in a Table-Service Restaurant at Midday Meal.”

American Academic of Kinesiology and Physical Education, Brad Strand, will be inducted as a Fellow at the annual meeting in Williamsburg, Va.

North Dakota Recreation and Parks Association Outstanding Young Professional Award, Joe Deutsch. 

Math Science Partnership Grant, Angie Hodge was awarded a $224,074 grant through the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction for a two-year project to develop and implement a North Dakota Mathematics Teacher Academy. Bill Martin and Dogan Comez are co-principal investigators.

Pediatric Exercise Science, Jared Tucker, co-wrote "Joint association of fatness and physical activity on resting blood pressure in 5-9-year-old children.”

Infant Behavior Development, Rebecca Woods wrote "Infants' tracking of three-dimensional occluded objects."

Diabetes Care, Arupendra Mozumdar and Gary Liguori wrote “Brief Report – Persistent Increase of Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome Among US adults: NHANES III to NHANES 1999-2006.”

Michigan Family Review, Christi McGeorge and Tom Carlson wrote “Social justice mentoring: Preparing family therapists for social justice advocacy work.” They also presented a workshop at the national conference for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy in Atlanta, and McGeorge was selected to be chair-elect of the Family Therapy section of the National Council of Family Relations. 

Growing Child Care in North Dakota Aim4Excellence Scholarship, the Center for Child Development has been chosen to participate due to its designation as an NAEYC Accredited Child Care Center. Deb Habedank will earn her center director credential by completing an online course from the McCormick Institute of National Louis University with the Aim4Exellence Scholarship.

Distinguished Service Award, Julie Garden-Robinson received the honor from the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She also was the Central Region recipient of the "Program Excellence Through Research Award." 

American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Conference, Kristen Benson, moderated the LGBTQI Caucus open forum and presented a workshop with colleagues from Western Michigan University titled "Transgender Couples: Issues and Clinical Implications for Couple Therapists.”

Journal of Applied Gerontology, Kris Bjelde and Greg Sanders had a manuscript, "Change and Continuity: Experiences of Midwestern Snowbirds," accepted for publication.

“Fit-Well: Questions and Answers,” book published by Gary Liguori, and Sandra Carroll-Cobb, University of Alaska – Anchorage.
