English and music departments present Cosgrove Seminar

The English department will present “Winter Words: An Hour with Benjamin Britten and Thomas Hardy” on Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Memorial Union Gallery as part of the Cosgrove Seminar Series. Refreshments will be served. All of the campus community is welcome to attend.

In the 1950s, with England struggling to recover from World War II, Benjamin Britten created a set of art songs, “Winter Words,” based on a selection of poems by Thomas Hardy. Five of these art songs have been the focus of a pedagogical experiment by students and faculty from the English and music departments in fusing the traditional senior music recital with the English capstone experience.

During the presentation, Bobby Frasier, a senior majoring in English, will recite and interpret poems and Evan Montgomery, a senior majoring in music, will sing and interpret music. Mentoring assistance will be provided by Robert Jones, professor of music, and Robert O’Connor, professor of English. Jones and O’Connor will discuss the place the experiment occupies in their cross-disciplinary teaching and scholarship.
