Nineteen third-year landscape architectures students and their professor, Stevie Famulari, will transform the east and west entrances of the Downtown Public Library on Monday, Nov. 15. Their temporary exhibits, “Symphony in Red” and “Transforming Perception,” will redefine the transitions between interior and exterior.

The exhibit will be open to the public during regular library hours Nov. 15-21. A public reception is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 17, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

"Transforming Perception" will be installed at the east entrance. Inspired by the changing effects of the Red River, the design will bring awareness of the river's impact on the city.

"Symphony in Red," located at the west entrance of the building, will draw in the public through flowing red fabric. Using 200 yards of vibrant red fabric, the design appears to move through the glass windows giving the illusion of no glass.

Students began planning the project weeks ago. They divided into two groups each choosing a library entrance. In mid-October they started researching the history and existing conditions of the site. Based on their analysis, both groups began exploring potential ideas for a design.

"It's an interesting feeling to design something that you know other people will get to experience. It has also been a new challenge to design with the intention of actualizing our work," said Nathan Thomas, landscape architecture student.
