Science Cafe presents ‘Better Living through Plants. Are Biorefineries the Panacea?’

The debate between the viability of fossil resources and biomass is the topic of the next Science Café on Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. in Stoker’s Basement, Hotel Donaldson.

Mukund P. Sibi, university distinguished professor of chemistry and biochemistry, will discuss the pros and cons of biorefineries as a replacement for petroleum refineries to meet the growing needs of a the 21st century world.

Sibi said because fossil fuels are currently our primary source of energy and chemicals, there is a debate on their sustainability as an energy source. “There is an urgency to identify eco-friendly alternatives to fossil fuels. Biomass has been hailed as a potential renewable resource alternative to fossil fuels.”
