NDSU students and graduates are sought after when they enter the job market. One of the ways the university helps students and employers connect is through career fairs.
A major employment event is coming up at the Fargodome – the two-day Fall Career Expo.
More than 370 regional and national employers have registered for the event, and an estimated 2,000 students are expected to attend. Many of them will make initial contacts about jobs or internships.
Senior Bruno Pareja Lozano, a strategic communication major, said attending expos as a freshman helped him learn about the community. “I find the Career Expos to be an eye-opening experience for all students, no matter their career path or year,” he said. “Now that I’m closer to graduating, I realize the importance of these expos. The career center organizes this event to get the students a feel for the real world but also teach them about the importance of networking, preparing for the workforce and socializing with people who share the same passion.”
Second-year computer engineering student Sadiyo Hasaan was energized about her future after a career fair earlier this year. “The part-time job fair was exactly what I needed at the beginning of the semester,” she said. “After seeing how many employers wanted students with my skills, I left feeling very encouraged about finding a job that was going to help me grow into becoming a better engineer.”
At the expo, students are introduced to many different industries, and to careers that may not have been on their radar. Employers are hiring specific majors, but also for various job skills. All majors are encouraged to attend because of the broad benefits for all participating students.
“This year we have over 370 unique employers registered to attend the 2019 Fall Career Expo. They represent many industries and are hiring for diverse skill sets and majors,” said Smita Garg, NDSU Career and Advising Center assistant director of employer engagement. “Career Fairs are not just for graduating seniors, they also are a great opportunity for first and second year students to develop networking skills and start building relationships with potential employers.”
The focus of Day 1 is Agriculture and Business. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The second day, which focuses on Engineering and Tech, is set for Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The NDSU Career and Advising Center, in collaboration with the NDSU Center for Professional Selling and Sales Technology, also will host the Marketing and Sales Hiring Fair during the Fall Career Expo. The hiring fair helps employers operating in business-to-business markets connect with students seeking marketing and sales careers.
Students and employers attending the event are encouraged to use the Career Fair Plus app, which is available at Google Play or Apple’s App Store.
