NDSU Department of Plant Sciences doctoral student Andrej Svyantek received a Proven Winners Innovations in Plant Breeding scholarship. He was selected out of 100 applicants for one of three scholarships in the categories of plant breeding, growing and horticultural marketing.

The Innovations in Plant Breeding scholarship recognizes students who are dedicated to developing novel plants for the horticultural market. “I want to breed big, bold, delicious plants with eye-catching form that remain functional despite environmental stresses and biotic constraints,” Svyantek said.

Svyantek, who is from Auburn, Alabama, is researching the practical application of grapevine canopy management techniques to improve fruit and wine quality for North Dakota grape growers for his doctoral dissertation.

He is advised by Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, professor and leader of the high value crops production project.
