Visiting scholar to give NDSU presentation

Author Larry A. Nielsen, professor emeritus of forest and environmental resources at North Carolina State University, is set to give a visiting scholar presentation Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. in Minard Hall room 230. His talk is hosted by the NDSU Departments of History, Philosophy and Religious Studies; Environmental and Conservation Sciences; and Natural Resources Management.

Nielsen is set to present “Lessons from the great conservationists of the past.” The talk is free and open to the public.

Nielsen will discuss the difficult era we live in for environmentalists and how they can gain inspiration from past conservationists, such as John Muir, Rachel Carson, Chico Mendes and Wangari Maathai.

Nielsen has written a number of books and textbooks; among them are “Nature’s Allies: Eight Conservationists who Changed Our World,” “Ecosystem Management: Adaptive, Community-Based Conservation,” “Provost: Experiences, Reflections and Advice from a Former ‘Number Two’ on Campus” and “Nonindustrial Private Forest Landowners – Building the Business Case for Sustainable Forestry.”

Nielsen earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Illinois, master’s degree from the University of Missouri and doctorate at Cornell University. His scholarly interests include sustainable natural resource management, history and philosophy of natural resource management and ecosystem management.
