The NDSU Department of Biological Sciences is set to host a seminar presentation by Artem Novozhilov, associate professor of mathematics, on Friday, Oct. 25, at 3 p.m. in Van Es 101.

His seminar is titled “A Biologist's Guide to the Mathematical Aspects of the Quasispecies Theory.”

According to the abstract, the so-called quasispecies theory was originally put forward by Manfred Eigen in his paper, “Selforganization of matter and the evolution of biological macromolecules,” published in 1971. Eigen attempted to construct a multi-faced theory of the origin of life, bringing together biology, chemistry, information theory, physics and mathematics.

Eigen formulated a dynamical mathematical system, which has been a subject of active research for the past 50 years. Novozhilov, who has contributed to that research in recent years, will present the history, main results and his own contributions to the mathematical analysis in layman's terms.

Novozhilov joined the NDSU faculty in 2012. He earned his master’s degree and doctorate in applied mathematics at Moscow State University of Communication Means, Russia.
