NDSU hosts computer programming competition

A team of NDSU students won their site in the International Collegiate Programming Competition of the Association for Computer Machinery hosted by the NDSU Department of Computer Science on Nov. 9.

Programming teams from NDSU, University of North Dakota, Minnesota State University Moorhead, Concordia College, University of Minnesota-Morris and Bemidji State University competed for five hours, trying to solve 11 programming challenges. NDSU is one of 14 sites of the North Central North America region.

The winning team from NDSU included computer science students Wyly Andrews, Sophie Noel and Nicholas Pfeifer and were coached by computer science professor Anne Denton.

“The competition is much more challenging than typical course work,” Denton said. “Most students participate because they enjoy the challenge. Competitions are also good practice for job interviews.”

Overall, the NDSU team finished 20th out of more than 165 teams.
