Carrie Johnson, Extension specialist and associate professor of human development and family science, was one of 53 faculty members from around the country to be quoted in a recent story on WalletHub.com.

The story, “Gas Credit Cards: WalletHub makes it easy to find the best gas card for you,” gave expert advice on how to select the right card.

Johnson responded to three questions:

• What types of people should consider applying for a gas rewards credit card?

• How much higher of a gas rewards earning rate do you think is needed to warrant committing to a particular gas station chain?

• Does it make sense to get a gas rewards credit card when gas prices are low?

Johnson’s advice included, “With any credit card, it is important to pay the balance in full each month. A gas rewards card can offer a nice benefit for individuals who purchase gas, but if a balance is carried and interest/fees are charged, the benefits may not be worth the extra expense. People who do not have the money or discipline to pay off the balance probably should not get a gas rewards credit card just to save money on gas purchases.”Johnson joined the NDSU faculty in 2016. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Dakota State University, Madison, South Dakota; master’s degree in family and consumer sciences from South Dakota State University, Brookings; and doctorate in family and consumer science education at Iowa State University, Ames.
