Learn from the best in NDSU emergency management

NDSU is home to one of the top emergency management programs in the nation. Students can pursue a major, minor or master’s degree in emergency management that will equip them with the skills to prepare for and respond to disasters.

Many students in the emergency management major have a desire to better their communities. Christyn Knudtson came to NDSU looking for a way to serve others and found her passion for emergency management.

“I realized I could go to school to help people in the exact way I had been searching for but never knew was possible,” said Knudtson, a junior from Harvey, North Dakota. “As a kid, I would help sandbag and evacuate people during flooding season but never realized those activities were part of a much bigger picture until coming to college.”

The curriculum is designed to challenge students and fully prepare them for the industry. The Department of Emergency Management provides professional development, volunteering and internship opportunities. Students also get to work on projects that impact local organizations to gain real-world experience.

“NDSU’s Department of Emergency Management has truly shaped me into who I am as a student and who I will be as a professional,” Knudtson said.

With a degree in emergency management, students can work in all levels of government or in the private sector. A variety of minors also are available to supplement the major and increase employability.
