Reboot your future with NDSU dietetics program

NDSU is a wonderful place to reboot your future.

Just ask senior Julia Lutgen, who was a 28-year-old single parent when she enrolled at NDSU as a full-time student. Her interests are in pediatric nutrition and education focused on chronic disease prevention, so she saw NDSU’s dietetics program as a pathway for personal and professional development.

The program’s national reputation for excellence attracted Lutgen. Students have the choice of two options – the Dietitian Education Program and the Didactic Program in Dietetics – making it the perfect fit for her.

“There is such a variety to the classes in the NDSU dietetic program, covering everything from nutrition science and community education to managing a café,” Lutgen said. “In NDSU’s dietetics program, you also get hands-on experience through field trips and community volunteer opportunities. But where there’s fun, there’s work. You are pushed to learn a great deal in this program, but this is college – isn’t it supposed to be a challenge?”

Lutgen and her dietetics classmates learn in top-notch facilities at NDSU. The Nutrition Laboratory has the latest molecular biology, biochemical and tissue culture instrumentation, and students operate the 800 Café through the Food Production Management Laboratory. Students also have practicum experiences where they work with registered dietitian nutritionists in real-world situations.

According to Lutgen, NDSU’s caring people make it special.

“From professional advice about projects or internships to emotional guidance, the dietetics department faculty and staff are there to help,” Lutgen said. “The instructors carry this program, and they make pursuing this degree such an enriching experience. They truly believe in their students and they work hard to set us up for success.”
