Alumni Association announces award recipients

The NDSU Alumni Association has announced the 2011 recipients of the Alumni Achievement, Henry L. Bolley Academic Achievement, Heritage and Horizon Awards. The awards will be presented at the NDSU Alumni Awards Celebration on Thursday, May 12, at the Fargo Hilton Garden Inn. All alumni and friends are welcome to attend. The social begins at 6 p.m. followed by dinner and the awards presentation.  

Alumni Achievement Award

William P. Brown, BS ’54, civil engineering, and Dan Noble, BS ’81, architecture and architecture studies, are recipients of the Alumni Achievement Award, which is given to graduates who have excelled in their professions.

Brown has distinguished himself in the aerospace industry. After spending 25 years in the military aircraft division at Boeing Co., he joined Hughes Helicopters where he played a primary role in the development of the AH-64 Apache helicopter. When McDonnell Douglas Corp. acquired Hughes Helicopters in 1984, Brown was named vice president of engineering. The following year he was appointed president and remained in that position until his retirement in 1990. 

Noble is the principal director of design with HKS Inc., which is considered one of the top 10 architectural firms in the world. Under his guidance, HKS has become recognized as an international leader in healthcare architecture as well as the design of hospitality and sports venues. He has received more than 50 design awards during the past five years. Noble also serves on the advisory board for the architecture program at NDSU.

Henry L. Bolley Academic Achievement Award

John F. Anderson, BS ’57, zoology, and MS ’59, entomology, is this year’s recipient of the Henry L. Bolley Academic Achievement Award, which recognizes alumni who work in education as instructors, researchers or administrators. Anderson earned his doctorate from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and is a distinguished scientist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, New Haven. For the past 25 years his research focused on emerging infectious diseases of humans and veterinary animals associated with mosquitoes and ticks. In 1999, he led the successful effort to isolate the West Nile virus from mosquitoes and birds. Anderson has written more than 280 scientific manuscripts in medical, veterinary, forest and general entomology and also has worked as a lecturer and researcher at Yale School of Medicine.

Heritage Award for Alumni Service

The Alumni Association is presenting the Heritage Award to Joanne and Mike Warner for outstanding volunteer service to NDSU.

Joanne Warner, BS ’70, physical education, is a former member of the Alumni Association board of directors where she served as president and was a member of the NDSU athletic NCAA certification committee.

Mike Warner, BS ’72, pharmacy, is former member of the NDSU Foundation board of trustees and the NDSU Research Foundation. Mike also served on the 2010 NDSU presidential search committee.

The Warners co-founded BisonArts, an organization that builds financial and promotional support for the benefit of NDSU Fine Arts. They launched the BisonArts Gala, a fundraising event that directly supports NDSU Fine Arts students. They also helped establish the BisonArts Singers.

Horizon Award

Erik Hatch, BS ’02, speech communication, is the recipient of the Horizon Award, which recognizes individuals who graduated within the past 10 years and have distinguished themselves in their professional field or in their service to their community. Hatch, a realtor at Keller Williams Realty, is the founder and director of Homeless and Hungry in Fargo. The organization offers a 30-hour homeless simulation where participants fast, sleep in a cardboard boxes and engage in the community through worship, outreach and service. During the past five years, Homeless and Hungry has raised more than $630,000, and collected more than 100,000 pounds of donations for local shelters. During the 2010 Fargo-Moorhead flood fight, Hatch was tapped to be the food service chief for the Salvation Army. Hatch also has served as board of trustees chair for Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and as the alumni adviser for the Blue Key National Honor Society.
