NDSU Digital Fabrication Lab produces protection equipment for health care providers

The NDSU Libraries’ Digital Fabrication Lab is doing what it can to help during the coronavirus pandemic.

The lab is using its laser technology and 3D printers to produce protective face shields and masks for local health care providers. The effort is led by Adam Elznic, emerging technologies coordinator.

“We are using the new laser engraver funded by an NDSU Foundation Impact Grant to cut the pattern for cotton cloth face masks,” said Elznic. “We are cutting the pattern and constructing kits to supply various community members who are interested in sewing them together.”

NDSU students are continuing their courses via distance learning and won’t return to campus for spring semester. So, Elznic knew the lab’s technology could be used for other purposes.

“As for the face shields, we are using a 3D print file that is going around internationally to assist health care professionals if they are needed,” Elznic said, noting it takes more than eight hours to create one face shield. “I have been in contact with NDSU colleagues, Emerging Prairie and other local companies to connect with health care providers so we can assist when needed.”

Elznic continues to download newer versions and modify designs to help make the process more efficient.
