Program spotlight: Professional selling

If a career in sales is your passion, NDSU can set you apart from the competition.

NDSU's Center for Professional Selling and Sales Technology is dedicated to developing students’ skills by offering a Certificate in Professional Selling. The program will open doors to rewarding opportunities in a variety of industries.

“At NDSU's sales program, they go above and beyond to ensure students are prepared for the future,” said recent graduate Lauren Graftaas, a business administration major from Moorhead, Minnesota, who earned her certificate. “There are numerous networking events for sales students to teach them essential networking and communication skills. They ensure that our critical thinking skills are developed in order to assist us in solving real life problems as they arise.”

The center is the only one of its kind in the 11-campus North Dakota University System. It has earned a national reputation; the Sales Education Foundation has recognized the center as one of the "Top Universities for Professional Sales Education" for seven consecutive years.

NDSU sales students get hands-on, real-world experience with corporate partners in many different fields. The certificate program is open to all students with junior status and with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

According to Graftaas, the faculty’s compassion and individual attention puts the NDSU program in a class by itself.

“I enjoyed how much the professors focused on the success of the students. They truly cared about what was happening in my life and my future,” Graftaas said. “The professors were always willing to meet outside of class, not only to assist with classwork, but also to evaluate job offers, provide resume tips and talk about life.”

During her time at NDSU, Graftaas won a university sales competition, which qualified her for a national event in Maryland. She excelled in all the rounds – cold calling, selling the product and negotiation.

Her educational experience has set the stage for career success.

Graftaas has accepted a full-time position with PepsiCo Frito Lay, and she’ll begin training to be a district sales leader.
