Getting involved at NDSU is easy, and your participation could change your life. NDSU has nearly 300 student groups, clubs and organizations, so there’s something for everyone.
“It is very important for students to get involved, because it allows them to connect with the campus on a deeper level than just attending classes,” said Anthony Soukoup, a senior microbiology major who is executive commissioner of the Congress of Student Organizations. “By surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals, NDSU students can learn more about themselves and whatever passions they choose to pursue.”
The first step is sometimes the hardest – picking the group that’s right for you. There are so many options, ranging from professional organizations to sports and activity clubs to Greek Life.
“Take some time to look over what we offer by going to myNDSU. Once you find an organization that you are interested in, email the leadership and ask them when and where they meet. After that, sticking with the organizations that you enjoy is as simple as attending and engaging in meetings and other events.”
By participating, you can experience a wide range of fun, interesting and fulfilling activities. You’ll feel more connected with fellow students and the campus community, and you’ll learn things that will be crucial throughout your life.
“Organizations build the soft skills that few classes can teach,” said Soukup, who is from Hudson, Wisconsin. “Leadership, delegation, problem solving and tact are all skills that are strengthened when working within organizations on campus. These skills are ones that students will be able to carry through their future careers and personal lives to help build them into the best form of themselves.”
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has impacted nearly everyone and everything, but NDSU’s student groups are adapting to the challenge.
“Some organizations are still maintaining a face-to-face aspect of their operation, some are entirely online and others using a hybrid model,” Soukoup said. “My advice is to know what you are comfortable doing in these times and find an organization that is operating in a manner that suits your boundaries. There are plenty out there providing many different experiences.”
