Donald Johnson, assistant professor of history, was awarded the 2021 Distinguished Book Prize in U.S. History from the Society for Military History for his book, “Occupied America: British Military Rule and the Experience of Revolution.”

The 304-page book, published by University of Pennsylvania Press, tells the story of ordinary people living under military occupation during the American Revolution. It concentrates on port cities held by the British army.

Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, his master’s degree from the University of Delaware’s Winterthur Program in American Material Culture and his doctorate at Northwestern University.

His research and teaching focuses on colonial America and the early Republic, and he also teaches courses in NDSU’s public history program.
