Mohammed Mohammed, an NDSU junior majoring in civil and environmental engineering, is set to give a presentation during the upcoming 2021 Posters on the Hill event, sponsored by the Council on Undergraduate Research. The virtual public poster session is scheduled on Wednesday, April 28, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Mohammed’s talk is titled “Evaluation of the Strength of Overconsolidated Soils.” In the research funded by the National Science Foundation, direct simple shear tests were conducted using different mixed fine-grained soil samples to study their behavior. Results were analyzed using the Stress History and Normalized Soil Engineering Properties technique to examine the strength of soils that have been previously subjected to higher pressures than the pressure currently applied on them

“This research is significant to the civil engineering discipline in many ways,” Mohammed said in the description of his poster presentation. “It is necessary that we are familiar with all of the strength characteristics of different soils to eliminate the possibility of catastrophes from happening when engineering professionals design and construct civil infrastructure.”

Mohammed’s faculty adviser is Beena Ajmera, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering.

Mohammed is among 60 student researchers from 42 states and the District of Columbia who will give poster presentations during the Posters on the Hill event. The array of research topics range from examining air pollution amid COVID-19 shutdowns to studying hydrogen as an aerospace fuel to assessing a virtual reality intervention for improving relationships between communities of color and police.
