Edwin Fissinger Choral Composition award winners announced

NDSU Music announced the winner of the Edwin Fissinger Choral Composition Prize, “When Music Sounds” by Nancy Hill Cobb, a composer and conductor from Terre Haute, Ind. The NDSU Concert Choir will premiere the piece on Oct. 2 in Festival Concert Hall. Second prize is awarded to “Walls of Glass” by Christian Martin, a music student at Binghampton University in upstate New York.

Major published compositions for Hill Cobb include “Thredony” for chorus and orchestra and “The Seven Last Words” for chorus and chamber orchestra. Her most recent choral publications are “Titania's Lullaby,” published in 2010, and “Invictus,” set for release in 2012. “Invictus” was the third in a series of commissions by the Ohio State University Men's Glee Club. Additional recent compositions include “Opacity and Translucence” for horn and piano, “Suite for Reeds” (commissioned by Trio Canna) and “Three Psalms” for tenor, cello and piano. Hill Cobb is director of the School of Music at Indiana State University.

The annual choral composition competition is organized by NDSU Music to honor the legacy of noted choral composer and longtime NDSU choral conductor Edwin Fissinger. Additional information can be found at www.ndsu.edu/finearts/music/fissinger.
