'Farm to Fashion Fair' set for NDSU

The Department of Apparel, Merchandising, Interior Design and Hospitality Management is set to host a special event about how wool fiber becomes fabric.

The “Farm to Fashion Fair” is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Family Life Center’s Room of Nations. The fair is open to students, faculty, staff and the public.

The event will focus on locally-raised wool and will feature Shepherd Industries LLC, Nome, North Dakota. Visitors can stop at six booths to get information and see demonstrations on wool processing, cleaning, spinning and knitting.

In addition, NDSU textile course students have created short informational videos that will be played during the fair.

“The fair was organized to highlight the local North Dakota fiber industry,” said Sara Sunderlin, senior lecturer of apparel, merchandising, interior design and hospitality management. “In the apparel industry, we see a trend for people to adopt ‘slow fashion,’ which emphasizes wearing natural fibers, choosing quality over quantity and wearing clothing for as long as possible.”

According to Sunderlin, the fair’s goal is to teach people where fiber comes from so they may be more considerate about their own textile choices.
