The talents of 15 NDSU landscape architecture students will be on prominent display Oct. 17-23 at the Fargo Public Library, located at 102 3rd St. N. The students have created two interactive, sensory experiences, titled “Exist. Observe. Compose.” and “Avenues to Illumination,” that will be shown in the library’s entry hallways.
A public reception is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The third-year landscape architecture students are taught by Stevie Famulari, assistant professor of landscape architecture. She said both designs are intended to explore the five senses of sight, smell, sound, touch and taste.
For the projects, the students created designs, illustrations, construction documents, models, invitations, contracts, budgets, documentation of the design process and a media kit.
“Every year the students continually strive to be even better than the previous year’s design,” Famulari said. “It has helped to improve their design skills quickly. I am very proud of the students’ learning curve to get to the point they can build their first design.”
“Exist. Observe. Compose.” will be located at the library’s west entrance. Designed to be a sensory walk through the history of Fargo, five different phases of sights and sounds will conjure memories for visitors.
At the east entrance, visitors will encounter three metaphors of a prism. “Avenues to Illumination” represents the desire for knowledge, the entrance of the library and the rewards to be found inside. Bright colored spotlights reflect off prisms suspended from the ceiling, drawing patrons into the metaphor.
Anna Eckberg, who worked on the “Exist. Observe. Compose.” project, said, “Throughout the project, all eight of us have collaborated well to create one unique design. I am excited to see how people interact with the space.”
Michael Blank, a student on the team that created “Avenues to Illumination,” said, “This wasn’t as easy as I thought it’d be. Designing a space and executing it are actually difficult.”
Students who participated in the “Exist. Observe. Compose.” display include Eckberg, Adam Boole, Aaron Hendrickson, Drew Holmgren, Bailey Krause, Joe Starbuck, Courtney Valen and Joshua Wildt.
The “Avenues to Illumination” design team included Blank, Amanda Ahrenholz, Ethan Gefroh, Andrew Herzog, Nathan Stottler, Amber Sunderman and Johannah Wiege.
