Carol A. Archbold, Walter F. and Verna Gehrts Endowed Professor and chair of the Department of Criminal Justice, wrote the keynote paper for September’s special section on police accountability for Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice.

The publication is the official journal of the American Society of Criminology’s Division of Policing.

The co-editor of Policing is William Terrill, associate dean in the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions at Arizona State University, who invited Archbold to write the paper after the death of George Floyd in summer 2020.

The paper, “Police Accountability in the USA: Gaining Traction or Spinning Wheels?,” gives an overview of the current state of police accountability in the United States. The paper also identifies obstacles to the progression of police accountability in the U.S. and offers several recommendations for overcoming those obstacles in the future.
