Activities planned for National Day on Writing

NDSU will participate in the National Day on Writing, an annual event organized by the National Council of Teachers of English, on Oct. 20. The celebration at NDSU includes the following events:

  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. – “Rotating Story,” Facebook and Thundar’s Den, Memorial Union

The Department of English will sponsor an “exquisite corpse,” or rotating story, on the NDSU Facebook page, with a new story started every hour by students in first-year English classes. Students, faculty and staff are invited to contribute to the story on NDSU’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ndsu.fargo. Individuals also are invited to view the story projected on a wall in Thundar’s Den, lower level of the Memorial Union. For more information, contact Brandi Fuglsby, English lecturer, at brandi.fuglsby@ndsu.edu.

  • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. – “Resources for Writers,” Memorial Union lobby

Staff from the Center for Writers and the NDSU Library will be available in the Memorial Union lobby from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to provide information about their services. Word games and activities also will be available. For more information, contact Mary Pull, director of the Center for Writers at mary.pull@ndsu.edu, or Char Myhre, senior reference librarian at char.myhre@ndsu.edu.

  •  Noon to 1 p.m. – “Writing a Dissertation and Planning a Thesis Defense,” Memorial Union Arikara room

The Graduate School will sponsor the presentation “Writing a Dissertation and Planning a Thesis Defense” by Jill Nelson, associate professor in the School of Education. The talk will discuss the process of writing a thesis and provide general tips for successful completion. Topics include selecting an adviser and committee, communicating with your committee, general expectations for the disquisition, and how to make the most of the experience. Resources for students and faculty members also will be available. For more information, contact Karen P. Peirce, graduate writing coordinator, at karen.peirce@ndsu.edu, or Sonya Goergen, Graduate School marketing, public relations and recruitment coordinator, at sonya.goergen@ndsu.edu.
