NDSU Libraries and School of Design, Architecture and Art showcase works of Native American architect

The NDSU Libraries and the School of Design, Architecture, and Art are hosting an exhibit of the architecture of Denby M. Deegan, Surrounded by Enemy. The display is in association with National Native American Heritage Month.

The display can be viewed Oct. 25-Nov.4, at the Flakoll Gallery located on the main floor of Renaissance Hall (650 Northern Pacific Ave.). Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Architectural drawings by Deegan were donated by his family to the NDSU Archives in 2021. Deegan was a 1965 NDSU graduate, earning a Bachelor of Architecture degree as well as a Bachelor of Science in architectural studies. The exhibit includes drawings of some of Deegan’s most well-known projects from his career and other details that represent how he incorporated Native American heritage into his work.

Deegan, who died in 2018, was a member of North Dakota’s Three Affiliated Tribes –the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation. He had a distinguished career as one of the first Native American registered architects in the United States and in North Dakota, with much of his work incorporating themes and motifs of Arikara culture and heritage. Deegan was a founding member of the American Indian Council of Architects and Engineers, a non-profit organization designed to encourage and mentor the development of Native American architects and engineers.
