NDSU students win regional construction competition

A team of students from the NDSU Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering won a top award at the North Central Region of the Associated Schools of Construction student competition held Oct. 24-27 in Nebraska City, Nebraska.

In the Heavy/Civil division, NDSU students took home the first place trophy. Team members included Kaleb Flaagan, Dayton Gonyea, Justin Heimkes, Levi Kuschel and Carlie Ripley.

The competition helps students learn how to work under pressure, work as a team and enhance their communication skills by placing them in real-life project management situations.

“This achievement proves the strength of our programs,” said Abdul-Aziz Banawi, assistant professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering and faculty adviser to the ASC student teams. “We provide our students with the essential skills to succeed as construction managers or construction engineers when they leave NDSU.”

During the competition, teams had 18 hours to submit bid proposals and prepare an oral presentation for a project rehabilitating existing roadway overpasses. A panel of industry judges reviewed and graded each team’s proposals based on design, scheduling, cost estimates, safety planning and quality management.

The North Central ASC student competition showcases some of the top students in the country. The annual event features more than 30 teams from 14 universities in seven states.
