Challey School of Music choirs to embark on spring tour

The NDSU Challey School of Music's Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers are set to begin a tour of the Dakotas and Minnesota March 16-20, performing at churches and cathedrals in five cities on five nights. Admission to all five concerts is free. This is the Concert Choir's first Spring Break Tour since 2019 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The choirs are scheduled to perform in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Waseca, Minnesota; La Crosse, Wisconsin; St. Paul, Minnesota; and Fargo. The March 16 to 19 concerts are set to begin at 7:30 p.m., while the show at Peace Lutheran Church in Fargo is scheduled for 2 p.m. See the full schedule below for concert locations. The opening concert of the tour in Sioux Falls will be held in conjunction with Augustana University.

The tour schedule includes:

March 16 - First Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, South Dakota

March 17 - Performing Arts Center, Waseca, Minnesota

March 18 - English Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Wisconsin

March 19 - St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, St. Paul, Minnesota

March 20 - Peace Lutheran Church, Fargo

In addition to the public concerts, the NDSU Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers are set to perform during the day at Colton High School in Colton, South Dakota, on March 16 and at Shattuck St. Mary in Faribault, Minnesota, on March 17.

Following the Spring Break Tour, the NDSU Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers are scheduled to head to Europe in May to tour Wales and England. It is the first European tour since 2018, when the Challey School of Music visited Germany and Denmark.

Under the direction of Jo Ann Miller - now in her 33rd year as NDSU director of choral activities - the NDSU Concert Choir has performed at state, regional and national music conferences; collaborated with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra; and presented Handel’s “Messiah” annually for 18 years. Choir members are from many majors at NDSU and more than two-thirds are music majors.

The NDSU Madgrigal Singers, all members of the NDSU Concert Choir, is a highly selective ensemble that performs vocal chamber music from the Renaissance through the 21st century. Under the direction of Michael Weber, the group performs throughout the year and presents the annual Madrigal Dinners performed in full costume with Renaissance revelry.

In addition to touring the NDSU Concert Choir recently released their Choral Anthology featuring recordings from the previous 32 years in the Challey School of Music.
