Holly Hassel, professor of English, recently delivered the national chair's address for the Conference on College Composition and Communication, the premier national organization focused on composition, rhetoric and writing studies.

Hassel, the organization's current chair, led the opening session of the annual convention with her address, "Writing (Studies) and Reality: Taking Stock of Labor, Equity, and Access in the Field."

The conference, which was held online, is attended annually by thousands of teacher-scholars in writing and rhetoric studies and related fields.

“I have been tremendously honored to serve in this elected professional leadership role. The chair’s address is one highly visible opportunity to provide colleagues with an opportunity both to reflect on and become energized by their work,” said Hassel, who has been a faculty member at NDSU since 2018.

Hassel also served as the program chair for the virtual 2021 annual convention and leads the CCCC Executive Committee, the organization's primary governance group. The annual address is held at the opening of the conference and is intended to provide a vision for the organization and the convention itself.

A print version of the address will appear in the December 2022 issue of the field's premier journal, College Composition and Communication.

Hassel’s teaching and research focuses on writing program administration, writing assessment, feminist pedagogy, placement and first-year writing. She earned her doctorate in English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
