Faculty member to lead Humanities ND board

Dennis Cooley

Dennis Cooley, professor of philosophy and ethics and director of the Northern Plains Ethics institute at NDSU, was elected board chair of Humanities ND, also known as the North Dakota Humanities Council.

His term begins July 1 and will run for one year.

Humanities ND’s mission is to invest in the people of North Dakota by creating and sustaining humanities programs that provide a better understanding of the past, a better analysis of the present and a vision for the future. Among its 10 programs are Public University classes, “Brave Conversations” and “One Book North Dakota.” The organization also awards grant funding to humanities projects throughout the state.

Cooley earned his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Rochester. His teaching and research interests include pragmatism, bioethics, business ethics, personhood, and death and dying. He is the author or editor of five books.
