The NDSU Residence Hall Association is set to host a national mental health advocate’s presentation in support of NDSU’s Green Bandana Project.

Archie Messersmith-Bunting is scheduled to present “It’s Okay Not to be Okay” on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Oceti Sakowin Ballroom. Tabling for community partners begins at 6:15 p.m.

“Part of the Green Bandana Project’s mission is to continuously educate and learn from others,” said Halie Van Vleet, a senior nursing student from West Fargo. “We are so excited to bring Archie from ArchieCares to NDSU. Archie is an advocate for reframing the narrative surrounding mental illness, suicide and addiction by focusing on feelings and facilitating vulnerable conversations. Those who have heard his talks leave inspired, empowered and committed to helping themselves and others, which is the goal of the Green Bandana Project.”

Messersmith-Bunting’s presentation will focus on his personal struggles with addiction and clinical depression.

The Green Bandana Project is a visual support system for anyone on campus struggling with anxiety or depression. Bandanas are attached to student backpacks when they have pledged to be a safe individual to approach with mental health-related issues and they know the location of resources. The green bandana is a sign of quiet solidarity.
