College of Engineering honors research excellence

Zhibin Lin, associate professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering, has been named the 2022 NDSU College of Engineering Researcher of the Year.

Lin’s research interests include civil infrastructural materials, performance and diagnostics. He has been involved in several interdisciplinary research projects and has secured more than $3.2 million in funding. Lin’s research provides opportunities for several graduate and undergraduate students and has led to six patent applications and more than 110 publications.

“Zhibin is a dedicated and well-organized professional who commits himself to guiding students toward their personal best,” said Fardad Azarmi, associate professor of mechanical engineering. “He is supervising several doctoral students and undergraduate researchers and is clearly able to transmit his passion and talent for research to young scientists.”

Lin joined the NDSU faculty in 2013 and was named the Early-Career Teacher of the Year in 2017 and the Early-Career Researcher of the Year in 2018. He earned his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Wenjie Xia, assistant professor in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, also was honored for his research efforts by being named the College of Engineering Early-Career Researcher of the Year.

Since joining NDSU in 2018 Xia has established a nationally recognized research program in advanced materials modeling and design.

“Dr. Xia is a brilliant, talented, highly productive and, no doubt, excellent researcher during his early career stage as junior faculty,” said Ying Huang, associate professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering.

Xia joined NDSU in 2018 after being a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He earned his doctorate in civil and environmental engineering from Northwestern University.

The College of Engineering’s final research award, Graduate Student Researcher of the Year, was presented to Amirhadi Alesadi.

Alesadi is a doctoral student in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering. His research aims to develop a multiscale modeling framework by integrating fundamental theories, computational techniques and experiments to facilitate design and development of next-generation of high performance organic semiconducting polymers.

Lin, Xia and Alesadi are set to be honored at the College of Engineering’s Scholarship and Awards Reception scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 13.
