“Should Historians Translate? A Humanities Colloquium,” featuring John K. Cox, NDSU professor of history, is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 2, at 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Zandbroz in downtown Fargo.

Faculty, students and the public are invited. Light refreshments and beverages will be served.

A historian and literary translator, Cox will explain why historians are good translators of works of literature, and why they should do it.

Cox's 18th work of translation is currently in press – he has translated works from Serbian, Hungarian, German, Slovene, Bosnian and Croatian. He specializes in the works of Ismail Kadare, Danilo Kiš, Biljana Jovanović and Erzsébet Galgóczi.

In 2022, Cox was named Literary Translator of the Year by the Serbian P.E.N. Center of Belgrade.

Cox is a two-time Fulbright scholar and a historian of the eastern Mediterranean. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Guilford College and master’s degree and doctorate in east European history at Indiana University.
