Women’s track and field athletes earn academic honors

The NDSU women’s track and field team had four student-athletes voted to The Summit League’s Academic All-League team for the 2023 indoor season.

Christie Collins, Grace Emineth, Alissa Melvin and Sofia Naranjo Mata all earned the honor by virtue of their athletic and academic achievements.

Collins, from Thunder Bay, Ontario, owns a 4.0 cumulative GPA as a biological sciences major. She ranked sixth in the league for the 200-meter dash and seventh for the long jump this season, as well as being top-12 in league for the 60 dash.

Emineth, of Fargo, was named the Summit League Indoor Championships Field MVP after winning the long jump and placing third in the triple jump. She ranked 64th in the NCAA for the long jump this season and has a 3.75 cumulative GPA as a pharmacy major.

Melvin, of Waterloo, Ontario, is a political science major with a 3.92 cumulative GPA. She posted the second-best triple jump mark by a Summit League athlete this season at 40-feet, 03.25 inches and ranks eighth in school history for the indoor triple jump.

Naranjo Mata, from River Falls, Wisconsin, owns a 3.97 cumulative GPA as an architecture major. She was a member of the Bison distance medley relay that claimed the Summit League championship and recorded a personal-best 400m time of 57.19.

To be eligible for The Summit League Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 (on a 4.00 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team’s competitions. The award is voted on by the institutions’ faculty athletic representatives and sports information directors.
