NDSU to host screening of documentary ‘It Was Rape’

NDSU’s Sexual Assault Prevention Program is hosting a rough-cut screening of Fargo native Jennifer Baumgardner’s in-progress documentary “It Was Rape.” The 45-minute premiere, which is open to the public, is scheduled for Friday, April 27, at 3:30 p.m. in Beckwith Recital Hall. There is no admission charge.

An internationally known author, activist and filmmaker, Baumgardner will answer questions following the screening. The film highlights rape’s cultural prevalence and interrupts the silence and shame that surrounds it. Baumgardner will be joined by NDSU lecturer Dena Wyum, who is featured in the film.

“Advocating for sexual assault victims has been an important component in healing from my own rape,” Wyum said. “While it was a difficult decision to share my story in such an intimate way, my ultimate hope is that the film’s collection of stories honors the experiences of victims and allows non-victims a window into the trauma and effects of sexual violence.”

The film has been under development since 2008. The screening is one of the events sponsored by NDSU’s Sexual Assault Prevention Program for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
