History, philosophy and religious studies colloquium scheduled

Tracy Barrett, assistant professor of history, will present “Strangers in a Strange Land: The Overseas Chinese and Colonial Patterns of Control in French Madagascar” as part of the Department of History, Philosophy and Religious Studies colloquium series. The colloquium is set for Friday, April 27, at 3 p.m. in Putnam Hall 101.

Barrett seeks to compare overseas Chinese communities in French Indochina and in the French colony of Madagascar. In particular, she examines the ways in which French colonial authorities in Madagascar used their Indochinese experience to create an institutional model for registering, monitoring and tracking Madagascar’s overseas Chinese.

Barrett is completing a manuscript examining the structure and function of overseas Chinese societies and institutions in French Indochina during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
