NDSU community invited to participate in 'Take Back the Night'

The second annual Take Back the Night event is scheduled on the NDSU campus. The rally, march through campus and candlelight vigil are scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. beginning in Festival Concert Hall. All NDSU faculty, students and staff are invited to participate.

“Take Back the Night is an opportunity for the entire NDSU community to get together and take a stand against violence and show support for survivors,” said Sarah Dodd, assistant director of NDSU’s Sexual Assault Programs. “It is a chance to break the silence surrounding sexual violence in our community.”

The event will begin with a student-organized educational program. Three NDSU faculty and staff who have contributed to the campus’ efforts in sexual assault prevention will be highlighted. Following a march through a campus a candlelight vigil will be held in which people who have been impacted by violence will provide remarks.

As a sign of solidarity, NDSU and Minnesota State University Moorhead will hold events on the same day. The MSUM event is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. with a barbeque and music by Kris Kitko followed by a program and march at 7 p.m. For more information on the MSUM event, contact Sherry Lee Short at 218-477-4070 or shortsh@mnstate.edu.

The NDSU event is sponsored by Sexual Assault Prevention Programs—Office of Student Life, Residence Life, Equity and Diversity Center, Greek Life, Women and Gender Studies, Counseling Center and University Police.
