NDSU’s late-night student activities are fulfilling their purpose, according to an assessment of 2011-12 events.
Late-night event attendance on campus reached 17,750 in 2011-12, with 1,588 students attending the first event of the year, a dance called Club NDSU. This year, 1,748 students attended the first Club NDSU dance on Aug. 18.
“Since the creation of Club NDSU, students have been able to enjoy a nightclub feel on campus,” said Kim Bruemmer, assistant director of campus activities. “They have the opportunity to dance, play video games, use the Memorial Union recreation center for free and meet new people, all while enjoying great music. It really has turned into a great program that students look forward to each year.”
Activities such as Club NDSU and other dances, game nights and free movies are sponsored by the Campus Live Program on Saturday nights throughout the school year. The goal is to provide fun, late-night activities on campus in support of students making low-risk decisions about alcohol use.
An assessment of 2011-12 Campus Live events showed:
• 73.5 percent of students who attended thought the events were substantially or somewhat better than going to a bar or party where alcohol is present.
• 66.6 percent of students who attended were likely or very likely to attend another late-night event on campus.
• Students who attended were more likely to abstain from drinking or to drink more moderately than the average NDSU student.
“I enjoy Club NDSU because it’s a great way to keep me connected to campus when I’m not in class,” said John Lynch, an NDSU student, concerts coordinator for Campus Attractions and Club NDSU participant.
