Track and field team registers nation’s third-best GPA

The NDSU women’s track and field team tied for the third-best grade point average in Division I, according to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The Bison, who have received the All-Academic Team Award for eight-consecutive years, finished with a 3.58 cumulative GPA. Wofford College in South Carolina led the nation with a 3.61 team GPA.

“I am very proud of our team and their commitment to academics,” said Ryun Godfrey, head women’s track and field coach. “They are hard-working and dedicated to do their best in sport, in the classroom and in life.”

Seniors Leslie Brost and Brittany Page, juniors Emily Lesser, Maddie McClellan and Ashley Tingelstad, and freshmen Anna Benke and Sierra Rosenau were recognized as All-Academic selections.

Seniors Travis Fitzke, Jesse Morrow, Casey Orgon and Matt Tetzlaff, junior Andy Lillejord, sophomore Jerome Begin and redshirt freshman Brandt Berghuis earned All-Academic honors for the Bison men’s team.

To qualify for the All-Academic Track and Field Team, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and meet several performance guidelines.

NDSU’s women’s team earned Summit League championships in cross country, outdoor track and field and indoor track and field for the second-consecutive season last year. The men’s team earned its fourth straight league outdoor title.

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation’s top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
