Dickinson center schedules Beef Cattle and Forage Day

New concepts in forage management will be presented at the annual NDSU Dickinson Research Extension Center Beef Cattle and Forage Day scheduled for Monday, Aug. 19.

The free event will be held at the center’s ranch two miles south and three miles west of Manning, N.D.

Starting at 8 a.m., Kris Ringwall, director of the center, will host a ranch tour. He also will lead a discussion on the various management practices and cattle production methodologies in place at the center.

Soil health and how it relates to beef production will be the focus of a presentation by Allen Williams, who is a livestock researcher and consultant.

Other soil health presenters are Llewellyn Manske, Dickinson Research Extension Center range scientist, and Chris Augustin, NDSU area Extension soil health specialist.

There will be three presentations by producers regarding cover crops and grass-fed production. Producers John and Nicole Lamb of Calgary, Alberta, will talk about slow-grown, grass-fed beef. Lucas Hoff of Richardton, N.D., will discuss backgrounding calves by grazing unharvested corn, and Derrick Dukart of Manning will provide his findings from a cover crop grazing project that he is doing on his ranch.

Doug Landblom, animal scientist at the Dickinson Research Extension Center, has been conducting grass-fed beef research at the center. He and Songul Senturklu, Dickinson Research Extension Center visiting scholar, will present data from the study. They will discuss the parameters of the project and how they relate to soil health, animal performance and economics. Rob Maddock, NDSU associate professor, will discuss meat quality.

Ringwall and Landblom will finish the day with information on cattle size, calving dates and annual forage grazing.

An evening discussion with the speakers will take place at the center’s office in Dickinson beginning at 6:30.

For more information and to preregister for the evening discussion, contact Landblom at 701-456-1109 or douglas.landblom@ndsu.edu. Information also is available at www.ag.ndsu.edu/dickinsonrec/events/beef-cattle-forage-day.
