NDSU chemistry graduate student presents at research symposium

Kumarasamy

Elango Kumarasamy, an NDSU graduate student in chemistry and biochemistry, recently presented his research work at the American Chemical Society – Division of Organic Chemistry – Graduate Research Symposium. Kumarasamy is a fourth-year doctoral candidate in the laboratory of Sivaguru Jayaraman, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

Kumarasamy’s research work covers major areas of chemistry, such as photochemistry, photophysics, organic synthesis, and analytical and physical chemistry. His thesis work focuses on achieving higher enantioselectivity in light-induced synthesis using molecularly chiral chromophores.

“The symposium was an ideal opportunity for Elango to present his research work to the chemical community and show case his talents. I also am very proud to have him as a graduate student in my research group,” said Jayaraman, noting the invitation to the symposium is highly competitive and the candidates are selected based on their achievements as a graduate student. Research advisers make the nominations.

Kumarasamy previously received the North Dakota Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research doctoral dissertation fellowship from NDSU. He also received the NDSU chemistry and biochemistry research scholarship award.

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation's top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
