CSA Training Description
While we would like the campus community to report criminal incidents directly to the University Police department we know that doesn’t always happen. A student who is a victim of a crime may be more inclined to report it to someone other than the University Police. For this reason, the Clery Act requires all institutions to collect crime reports from a variety of individuals and organizations that Clery considers to be “campus security authorities” (CSA).
The function of a CSA is to report to the University Police allegations of Clery Act crimes that he or she concludes were made in good faith. Under Clery, a crime is “reported” when it is brought to the attention of a CSA by a victim, witness, other third party, or even the offender. It doesn’t matter whether or not the individuals involved in the crime, or reporting the crime are associated with the institution.
CSA’s are determined by the function of that individual or office. If someone has significant responsibility for a student and campus activities he or she is a campus security authority. Here are some examples of CSA’s at NDSU:
- Faculty or Staff Advisors to student organizations
- Student Affairs Professionals
- Dean and Assistant Dean of Student Life
- Student Rights and Responsibilities staff
- Directors of Residence Life
- Hall Directors and Resident Assistants
- Coordinator of Greek Life
- Director, Associate Directors, and Assistant Directors of the Memorial Union
- Sexual Assault Prevention Programs staff
- Director Student Health Services
- Dean of Student Wellness
- Director and Associate Director Wellness Center
- Director and Assistant Directors of Athletics
- Coaches and Assistant Coaches
- University Police and Communications Call Center staff
This is not a comprehensive list of all CSA’s. Those people who are CSA’s will be notified annually of their role as a CSA and directed to take mandatory CSA training.
If you have not been identified as a CSA but have been made aware of a crime you are still urged to report the incident to the University Police. NDSU is committed to providing a reasonably safe and secure campus environment. The help of all students, faculty, staff and guests by reporting crime and suspicious activity is imperative to achieve this goal.
